Client: Ministry of Mines and Steel Development of Nigeria (via EPC China Metallurgical Group)
Delivery Time: March 2025
Application: Stable and reliable power distribution for blast furnaces, rolling mills, auxiliary plants, and utilities
Project Overview:
QZ Switchgear delivered a full power supply package for the rehabilitation of Nigeria’s largest steel production facility. The system ensures continuous and reliable power for blast furnaces, casting, rolling mills, water treatment, and administrative facilities, addressing heavy impact loads and high reactive power demand typical of the steel industry.
Technical Highlights:
High-Voltage Side
132/33kV step-down transformers feeding 33kV distribution network
Double busbar configuration with sectionalized switchgear for reliability
ZW32 outdoor reclosers installed on overhead feeders for automatic isolation
Medium Voltage Distribution (33/6.6kV)
KYN28-12 switchgear panels with VS1 vacuum breakers for mill drives, compressors, and auxiliary workshops
RMU integration for compact distribution inside production areas
6.6kV busbar system connected to blast furnace blowers and rolling mill drives
Low Voltage Side
GCS low voltage switchgear for workshops, pumps, conveyors, and lighting loads
Prefabricated substations located near heavy-load zones to reduce transmission losses
Intelligent MCC (motor control centers) for large motors (>1MW)
Power Quality & Monitoring
Reactive power banks stabilized system PF at >0.95, avoiding penalties and improving efficiency
SCADA integrated monitoring of furnace transformers, feeders, and motor drives
Remote fault alarm and load analysis for preventive maintenance
Client Benefits:
Stable operation: Dual 132/33kV supply sources eliminated production downtime risk
Cost savings: Power factor correction reduced energy cost by ~8% annually
Customized design: Heavy-duty switchgear adapted for dusty, high-temperature environment
Future expansion ready: Modular switchgear and substations designed for capacity growth
