Utility-Scale Solar PV Project – Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

In line with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 renewable energy plan, a 100MW solar photovoltaic (PV) project was launched near Riyadh. The project site is located in a desert area with extreme high temperatures (up to 50°C), requiring durable and reliable power equipment to ensure long-term stable operation and efficient grid connection.

QZ Group Solution
QZ Group provided a complete solar power distribution and integration system, specially engineered for desert conditions:

  • Transformers

    • 0.6/0.4kV Dry-Type Transformers – connected to solar inverters for localized low-voltage conversion, resistant to high ambient temperatures.

    • 33/132kV Oil-Immersed Step-Up Transformers – for transmitting generated power to the national grid.

  • Medium & High Voltage Switchgear

    • KYN28-12 MV Switchgear – for feeder protection and inverter station interconnection.

    • Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) – for high-voltage substations, ensuring compact layout and sand/dust resistance.

    • Ring Main Units (RMU) – for sectionalizing and flexible solar field distribution.

  • Protection & Control

    • VS1 Indoor Vacuum Circuit Breakers – providing safe protection for medium-voltage circuits.

    • ZW32 Outdoor Pole-Mounted Breakers – ensuring feeder line sectionalizing under desert overhead conditions.

Outcome
The solution enabled seamless grid integration of the 100MW solar farm, with equipment designed for desert durability and high ambient temperatures. The project now supplies clean energy to thousands of households in Riyadh, contributing to Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy targets and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
